Currently an Associate Professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, I graduated from the University of Southern California with a PhD in Communication, focus in Rhetoric, Politics, and Publics. I am a rhetorician interested in scientific controversies, environmental communication, and the interactions of identity, ideologies, and storytelling. I am also the founder and co-director of Greenspun College's Public Communication Initiative.

In my research, I ask: 1) how do people use language and symbols to create identities and make sense of their relationship to one another, science, and the environment? 2) how do different symbol systems and ideologies (e.g., religion, science, politics, and economics) influence how we use language on topics of public and technical importance? 3) how can theoretical insights into environmental and scientific rhetoric apply to daily communication practices and inform strategies for productive public communication?

I can be reached at emma.bloomfield@unlv.edu to answer questions, brainstorm project ideas, and find new partners in research. Please feel free to look at the other pages on this site to learn more about my current research initiatives, read my current CV, and access some of my publications.
